My Teaching Practice

I have been teaching piano, flute and group musicianship for over 20 years (see below for teaching experience) to pupils of all ages ranging from 4 to 80.

My teaching practice is inclusive; every pupil has an individual learning plan tailored to their needs and interests in order to create long-lasting skills, including pupils with specific learning requirements. A priority is keeping my teaching studio fresh and up-to-date with subscriptions to organisations, teaching practices and composers in different parts of the world in order to share 'best practice'. For this reason, although exams are not a main focus in my studio, pupils who choose to take exams either face-to-face or online achieve high results. Collaboration and sharing music is encouraged right from the start in teacher/pupil duets, pupil duets and wider ensembles incorporating other instruments. We also explore understanding of chords through improvisation and songwriting. Kodaly and Dalcroze activities are used in my studio to aid a deeper understanding of music.

Pupil Concerts

Pupil concerts are held twice a year, usually an informal concert in the summer term followed by an annual Christmas concert. Since lockdown, these have been streamed online, giving pupils skills in filming their own performances and developing a critical ear. (see opposite, or below if on mobile, for Dec '18 Xmas Concert)
